I first heard today’s podcast guest speak at a special event earlier this year.  It wasn’t so much what he said that caught my attention as much as who he is and who God called him to be.  God called Dewayne Rembert to flatline; then he called Dewayne to Ngauge everyone he encounters to flatine.   As God spoke to Dewayne right out of Romans 6:11, “You have to die before you die, so you could live.  I want you to start Flat Line.”  The Flatline Movement is making an impact in Montgomery, Alabama and across the nation. Dewayne’s specific mission is to reach fatherless boys.  His broader mission is to remind us all of God’s grand invitation – “Count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”Dewayne and I sat down to some mighty fine salads at Newk’s Eatery to talk about flatlining.  You’re invited to plant yourself on the (operating) table and join us for a conversation that could jolt you back to life.

Lunch and Conversation at Reata Restaurant in Alpine, Texas
                    Featuring Special Guest:  Andrew Daniels                       

Whenever I meet a couple like Andrew and Rachael Daniels, I am reminded and encouraged once again that God is very much at work all around us all the time.  Andrew and Rachael own and operate Cedar Coffee and Supply in the high desert mountains of west Texas.  But they do a latte more than that.  There is a deeper purpose behind every macchiato they serve.  And if you happen by their coffeehouse on a Sunday morning, you can join them for Bible study.  (I was honored to teach there just the day before sitting down to this podcast.)  As some of their patrons have expressed over espresso – “there’s a cool vibe about this place.”   I sat down with Andrew at one of my favorite restaurants in the Big Bend – Reata.   He had the shrimp tacos; I enjoyed the fried chile relleno.  And after we wrapped up the table, we headed back over to Cedar & Supply so I could try a Desert Spring.  It was as refreshing as this episode.  So pull you up a chair and join us.  We saved you a cup!

Dinner and Conversation at Palmer’s Restaurant Bar & Courtyard in San Marcos, Texas

                        Featuring Special Guest:  Christy Guenther

You can’t sit down with today’s podcast guest without being totally blown away by her passion for the children and people of Haiti.  When Christy Guenther first stepped on a plane bound for Haiti in 2010, it was with great reluctance.  24 hours later she would be changed forever.  Today she oversees Maison Des Enfants De Dieu Orphanage (The Children of the Lord).  Christy and I sat down to some wonderful salads at Palmer’s Restaurant with out good friend Stephanie Cherry.  During our after-dinner conversation, I kept re-circling to the same theme – how do we go from “I don’t want to do this” to “I’m all-in, Jesus, wherever You lead?” Today’s table could change somebody’s life.  It might even be yours.  Pull up a chair out in the courtyard and order a salad.  I recommend the Gulf Shore’s Shrimp Salad.

This is one of those dream podcast episodes for me.  Eating brisket and sausage at the #1 BBQ joint in Texas with one of my best friends on the planet.  We welcome Denbigh Cherry to “the Table.”  He and his wife Stephanie model what authentic, creative Jesus-following looks like.  He’s a worship leader, songwriter, and musician.  (He wrote the catchy theme song that opens every “Redemption’s Table” episode.). Dinner and Conversation at Wintzell’s Oyster House in Montgomery, Alabama

                        Featuring Special Guest:  Hank TeutonI

learned of today’s podcast guest – Hank Teuton (rhymes with crouton) – from a comment of a total stranger.  It is amazing where God will lead when we pause and pay attention.  When Hank and I sat down to some good southern seafood at Wintzell’s Oyster House, it was one “wow” after another.  He served 31-years in the US Coast Guard. Along the way he became a luthier with a unique mission.  Hank names his instruments Baruch Guitars (Baruch is Hebrew for “blessed.”)  And although it is a completely different word with different meaning from the “blessed” of Jesus’ beatitudes, I could not help but think, “This is what someone’s life looks like when it becomes a living, breathing beatitude.”  So join us at our outside table.  We saved you a seat and some hushpuppies.

Lunch and Conversation at John’s City Diner in Birmingham, Alabama

I have known today’s podcast guest for four decades.  We attended Samford University at the same time. We both served as Ministers of Youth in different churches, different states.  We have followed Jesus together in a lot of different places – at Youth Camps, DiscipleNows, and other student events.  And we both have spent over 40 years obeying a single command of Jesus, “Go and make disciples.”  I was able to catch up with Bob a few weeks ago over some incredible Shrimp and Grits at John’s City Diner in downtown Birmingham.  The conversation was just as nourishing as the food.  We talked about what a lifetime of making disciples looks like. Slide on into the booth and join us. We saved you a seat.

Lunch and Conversation in my office

                        Featuring Special Guest:  Norman Askew

At the end of every “Table” conversation, I click off the recorder and ask my guests, “Who are three of the most redemptive people you know?” When I met with Pastor Arthur L. Price, Jr. a few weeks ago and asked him that question, Norman Askew was one of his three choices.  Norman serves as the Prison Ministry Assistant for the 16^thStreet Baptist Church in downtown Birmingham.  He has an “amazing” grace story that is gritty and real; from the streets of crime and death to a vibrant walk of ministry and new life.  He and I met for a wonderfully fresh summer salad in my office a few weeks ago.  Meeting new friends like Norman is one of the many blessings I receive from doing this podcast.  Toss up some fresh fruit and vegetables and join us.  We saved you a seat.

For the past 18 months I drive into downtown Birmingham twice a week to serve as a chaplain at Brother Bryan Mission.  At the corner of 3^rdAvenue N. and 14^thStreet I started noticing positive messages on the sign at Jim Edwards’ Chevrolet.  Right in the midst of a stretch of city streets where the homeless wander twixt rescue missions and interstate bridges were words of hope. I knew there had to be a story behind those words so I walked into the dealership and all the sales representatives pointed to Scott Rackstraw.  Scott and I met for lunch where I listened to an amazing journey of one man’s family who knows the power of redemption.  Grab a bagel and join us.  We saved you a seat.

Iced Coffee and Conversation at a Lively Starbucks Coffeehouse.
